Browser notifications for Messaging

How to enable or re-enable desktop browser notifications for Allison Messaging in Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari.

When you're using Messaging in Allison, your browser can pop up a desktop notification the moment a customer replies, so you don't miss a new message while you're working elsewhere in Allison, or in another tab or window. This guide walks you through turning those notifications on, or turning them back on if they were blocked before.

Good to know

  • Notifications appear while Allison is open in a desktop browser tab. If you close the browser, new-message alerts stop until you open Allison again.

  • You'll get a notification for any new message unless you're actively viewing the Messaging page — then it simply appears in your conversation list instead. (If Messaging is open in a background tab or an unfocused window, you'll still be notified.)

  • If you clicked Block or Don't allow the first time Allison asked to send notifications, your browser remembers that and Allison can't ask again. You'll need to change it yourself using the steps below.

Enable Desktop Notifications

To enable desktop notifications of new messages:

  1. Navigate to the Messaging feature within Allison

  2. Select the menu icon in the conversations list

  3. Switch on the "Notifications" toggle

  4. Follow any prompts presented by your browser to give permission to Allison

No prompt appeared, or the toggle won't switch on? Your browser is probably blocking Allison — see Troubleshooting Notifications below to fix it.

Disable Desktop Notifications

To disable desktop notifications of new messages:

  1. Navigate to the Messaging feature within Allison

  2. Select the menu icon in the conversations list

  3. Switch off the "Notifications" toggle

Troubleshooting Notifications

If you're having trouble receiving notifications of new messages, there are a few things to check.

Browser not granting Allison permission

At some point, Allison's permissions to send notifications to your browser may have been disabled or denied. The quickest place to fix this is the small icon at the left edge of the address bar (a lock, sliders, or info icon), where a site's permissions live.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Allison in Chrome

  2. Click the icon at the left edge of the address bar (a lock, sliders, or info icon, depending on your version)

  3. Find Notifications and set it to Allow. If you see Site settings, click it, then set Notifications to Allow.

  4. Reload the Allison window

Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Allison in Edge

  2. Click the icon at the left edge of the address bar

  3. Set Notifications for the site to Allow (via Permissions for this site or Site settings)

  4. Reload the Allison window

Mozilla Firefox

  1. Open Allison in Firefox

  2. Click the lock icon at the left edge of the address bar

  3. If you see Send Notifications set to Blocked, click the × / Clear next to it to remove the block (or set it to Allow)

  4. Reload the Allison window. When it asks, click Allow.

Alternative: Menu (≡) → Settings → Privacy & Security → scroll to Permissions → Notifications → Settings → find Allison → set to Allow (or Remove Website, then reload and click Allow).

Safari

  1. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Safari → Settings.

  2. Click the Websites tab, then select Notifications in the sidebar

  3. Find Allison in the list and set it to Allow

  4. Make sure "Allow websites to ask for permission to send notifications" (at the bottom of that screen) is checked

  5. Reload the Allison window

Once you've allowed notifications in your browser, return to Messaging and make sure the Notifications toggle is switched on.

Computer notification settings

Your computer may not allow notifications for your browser, or you have Do Not Disturb or Focus settings enabled.

  • On a Mac: open System Settings → Notifications, make sure your browser is allowed, and turn off Do Not Disturb / Focus.

  • On Windows: open Settings → System → Notifications, make sure your browser is allowed, and turn off Do Not Disturb / Focus assist.
